Two years ago when my company closed for the holidays, I went to Colombia with Alex. We started in Cartagena, floated in a mud volcano, then we glamped in Tayrona park, greeting everyone we met with a friendly buenas.
In other Spanish-speaking countries I’ve visited, you greet people with buenos dias (good morning) or buenas tardes (good afternoon). The challenge is that you have to know what time it is in order to greet someone properly. You will get strange looks if you say Buenos dias to someone at 12:30pm. In Colombia, everyone simply says buenas all day!
We celebrated Christmas in Santa Marta and flew to Medellin, the home of Pablo Escobar (but he wasn’t home). We took a bus into the mountains of Salento to visit the cloud forest then to the little town of Filandia. Finally back to Cartagena for New Years and we returned home, only a little sunburnt.
