December 2016
At my cushy new job we had a very generous vacation policy. Every year the company closed from Christmas to New Year’s Day so employees could spend time with their families. Obviously I love my family, but equally obvious was that I was going to go travel.
I wanted to go somewhere tropical to escape the winter, someplace that I wouldn’t normally go to. Someplace beautiful like Sri Lanka, a small island south of India. I went on my own but it was hardly a lonely trip. I hiked up Adam’s Peak at 5am on Christmas day and took a train to Ella with a Couchsurfing friend. Then hopped on a bus and dodged tuk tuks all the way down to the coast. Then welcomed 2017 by surfing, snorkeling, and boogie boarding with a group of lovely solo travelers.
