I wasn’t sure what I would learn when I set out in March, 5 months ago. I knew I had a lot of experiences ahead of me but I was thinking less about the lessons I would learn along the way. Here are a few of my favorites:

  1. Always carry food and water. Or at least some cash.
  2. Don’t wait until the last pair of underwear.
  3. You will be sad and crabby some days, but at least you will be sad and crabby somewhere exotic.
  4. You can buy deoderant, toothpaste, and sunblock wherever you are going. Don’t try to pack enough for the entirety of your trip.
  5. Some people will try to hustle you. But most are just being friendly. Be friendly back.
  6. You can choose not to have traveler’s FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). Don’t try to follow someone else’s travel plans or worry that you missed something. You can’t see and do everything you “absolutely have” to do. Do what you want to do.
  7. The bus will get there when it gets there. Have patience. And a candy bar.

  • StephanieStupack I think July slipped by too fast!

I miss you guys too, I can’t wait to see you in a few months 😀
*spoiler: I’m almost-definitely coming to SF for a week in late October.*

  • gwv2002 And the sunblock will be there when you get there!

  • debbyandell Something about candy bars, especially chocolate covered ones, is magical.

It’s already been 5 months?? No wonder we miss you so much.

Sounds like you are making the best of it though 🙂 Keep eating candy bars for me

so, what you’re saying is “always carry the last pair of underwear while you are sad and crabby and someone is hustling you, so do what you want to do and have a candy bar when you get there”.

Lots of good advice, some of which can be broadly applied . Are you really only 25?
    Love, mom 🙂
